What is a show shirt?

What is a sun shirt?
A sun shirt is a UPF 30 to 50 long sleeve, usually a crew or quarter-zip, moisture-wicking and made for hours in the sun. It is the shirt you school in five days a week. It is usually not ring-legal: most sun shirts have no collar or choker, and hoods are explicitly prohibited in the jumper ring (JP111.11c: “shirts with exposed hoods are prohibited”).

Can you ever show in a sun shirt?
Sometimes. Some hybrid show shirts are effectively sun shirts with a collar or choker, and those are legal wherever a riding shirt with a choker is required. In Standard jumper attire, any collared, sleeved shirt tucked into breeches works, so a collared sun shirt qualifies; a hooded one never does. At schooling shows, check with management, since many allow sun shirts.
Which should you buy first?
If you show at all: the show shirt first. You can school in a show shirt, but you cannot show in most sun shirts. A sensible build order: one white show shirt, then one sun shirt for schooling, then colored show tops for jumper days.

Can you wear a sun shirt in the hunter ring?
No. Hunters and equitation require a shirt with a choker, similar collar, or tie. A crew-neck sun shirt does not qualify, even in white.
